Prevalence of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and Capnocytophaga in Localized Juvenile Periodontitis

Abstract
A actinomycetemcomitans and Capnocytophaga are gram-negative oral bacteria which have been implicated in the etiology of localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP). In order to investigate the relationship between these 2 microorganisms and Korean LJP, the proportion and the occurrence rate of Aa and Capnocytophaga were determined from 8 LJP or post juvenile periodontitis(PJP) patients with 5 rapidly progressive periodontitis (RPP) and 5 adult periodontitis (AP) patients as control. Subgingival plaque samples were taken by using paper point from the diseased periodontal pocket and relatively healthy suicus of each patient. Culture was performed in selective media for Aa and Capnocytophaga and nonselective blood agar plate for total count, under the condition of air plus 10% CO2.
The results- were as follows ;
1) Aa was recovered in 55% of LJP and 80% of RPP lesions and not detected in AP lesions. Proportion of Aa recovered from diseased sites was higher than the proportion from healthy sites.
2) Capnocytophaga occurred in LJP, RPP, and AP sites in similar frequency and the proportion from AP lesion was slightly higher than 2 other disease categories.
3) In LJP, C. ochracea was predominant in disease sites, when compared with C. sputigena and C. gingivitis.
